Sherry Steele and Elizabeth Turnbull are featured soloists in the Bach Christmas Oratorio Concert (December 3, 2017, at the Winspear Centre).
Originally from London, Ontario, Sherry is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario. She has performed with orchestras and in musical theatre throughout Canada, and toured internationally as a featured singer in Riverdance – The Show. Sherry also performed with the Broadway company of Riverdance at the Gershwin Theatre for more than a year.
Sherry has been teaching piano and voice for more than twenty years, most recently at the Don Wright Faculty of Music at Western University, and currently at the University of Alberta.
Mezzo soprano Elizabeth Turnbull, hailed by the critics as ‘a revelation’, with ‘controlled passion, acute timing and glistening presence’ has many and varied credits including appearances with major orchestras and opera companies across North America and Europe. Her roles range from the baroque to the modern era, and also include premieres of newly written operatic works. Concert experience has included traditional oratorio and song repertoire, as well as numerous new music compositions.
Elizabeth has been an instructor of voice at the Department of Music at the University of Alberta since 2009. Together with her Voice Area colleagues, Elizabeth was the recipient of a Faculty of Arts Unit Teaching Award, and in addition, has recently been honored with the University of Alberta Alumni Award of Excellence, recognizing her achievement in launching the inaugural Mysterious Barricades Cross Country Concert for Suicide Awareness and Prevention.
